The Wellington south coast is being transformed into a reserve, from Owhiro Bay to Tongue Point and up to Hawkins Hill. The coast itself is rugged and consists of some beaches and jagged volcanic rocks. The South Coast affords great views of the South Island with snowy peaks in Winter, including the Marlborough Sounds and the Kaikoura Range.

Notable places include Lyall Bay for surfing, Red Rocks for walking and viewing seals and sometimes whales, and Princess Bay for swimming.
