New Zealand mountains rise to nearly 4000 metres above sea level in the South Island's Southern Alps. These mountains run for a 650 km, that is half as long as the European Alps combined. This is impressive when you consider that the Southern Alps are wholly contained in the South Island which is itself only 840 km long.
The slightly smaller North Island has mountains too. The tallest are volcanoes, but there are a number of impressive ranges in the lower half of that island.
