Banksia is a genus of around 170 species endemic to Australia, although one species is found in nearby islands that do not belong to Australia. The genus consists of shrub and tree species with most being flowering plants. Over 90% exist in the southern half of Western Australia with the remainder scattered around the Australian coast and inland as far as there is sufficient rain. They also exist in the island state of Tasmania.
Banksia are easily recognisable with their characteristic cones and flower spikes which are rich in nectar. The genus is an important food source to nectivorous animals in Australia.
