Hamilton Island is the commercial centre of the Whitsundays. The island has two areas of development. Resort Side which has the main beach, (Catseye Beach), pools, and most of the accommodation. Harbourside (also called Marine Village) offers cruises and boat trips, restaurants, shops, and bars. Both these areas are situated on the north side of island which also includes the airport while in the south is natural rainforest and bushland. There are also a number of nice beaches and some small coral reefs that are part of the Barrier Reef. The best beach, Catseye Beach is in the resort area.
Accommodation on the island includes a number of hotels from 3 star to premium luxury accommodation ranging from bungalows to luxury villas as well as holiday homes. There is also over 20 restaurants, 6 bars, and nightclubs. Buses on the island are free to use and the main mode of personal transport are golf buggies.
An unusual promotion campaign in 2008 generated more than $200 million in global publicity value for Tourism Queensland, when the caretaker's position as the 'Best Job in the World' was advertised globally. The job offerred $150,000 for someone to spend six months on Hamilton Island which involved blogging about the island once a week. The advertising agency responsible was awarded three top awards at the Cannes International Advertising Festival. BBC Television even made a one hour documentary about the final stages of the campaign and the film achieved the highest viewing figures for that week.
