Cyclone Tracy was a cyclone (hurricane) that devastated the city of Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory. It struck the city from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, 1974. While not a big cyclone in area, it was the world's most compact hurricane or equivalent-strength tropical cyclone on record till 2008. Tracy killed 71 people, caused AUD $837 million in damage (1974). It destroyed more than 70 percent of Darwin's buildings, including 80 percent of the city's homes.
