ReStart was a shopping complex on the fringe of the Christchurch CBD. It was the first part of the city centre to open to the public after the devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.
Around 80% of Christchurch's buildings were destroyed or suffered serious damage. Re:Start Mall brought a slice of normality and vitality back to the city's CBD. It closed in January 2018 to make way for new buildings including the Riverside complex.
The mall was constructed from brightly coloured steel boxes, aka decorated shipping containers. This helped the mall to rise up quickly which was an important strategy in keeping the CBD alive while demolition and reconstruction work took place. Shipping containers are robust making them ideal structures for earthquake prone areas. Even during construction of the mall, aftershocks were taking place on a regular basis. The project demonstrated the resilience of Christchurch citizens during the city's recovery and kept part of the CBD open so people wouldn't lose touch with that part of the city.
