The Porthole Bar & Restaurant in Lyttleton is made from three shipping containers connected with a wooden deck. The shipping containers reflect that Lyttleton is a port, but they also have a practicle use. After the devastating February 2011 earthquake, ReStart Mall was constructed and the first part of the CBD to open for business. Shipping containers are almost earthquake proof and quick and easy to construct buildings. This has encouraged the use of shipping containers elsewhere in the city including Lyttelton.
