In the 1880s, the Lower Wainuiomata Dam was commissioned, along with a pipeline to transport water to Wellington City. The dam was taken out of service in the 1950s and decommissioned after 2004. A swampy area with a small lake remains which has become a natural habitat for local birdlife.
