The Provincial Hotel was built in 1932 by builders Holder Bros. at a cost of 6700 pounds. It is a single story reinforced concrete building by the Architects Finch and Westerholm. The original finish was pink plaster with lettering in buff. The dining room notably featured a decorative mural by W E Gunn incorporating Maori motifs.
