The Wellington Cable Car transports passengers between Lambton Quay, (the main retail street in Wellington's CBD) to the suburb of Kelburn high above the city. The route goes under the state highway 1 then through a number of tunnels, past Victoria University and Kelburn Park. It ends at the highest point of the Botanic Gardens in the suburb of Kelburn. The Cable Car a Wellington tourist attraction and icon but is also a useful form of transport for locals.
Originally constructed at the end of the 19th century to move people up the to Kelburn when it was a new residential development, the location of Victoria University constructed later on was influenced by the cable car to enable students to travel between the CBD and the university. Today it is still a favourite form of transport for students.
