The southern suburbs of Wellington include: Berhampore, Houghton Bay, Kingston, Kowhai Park, Island Bay, Mornington, Mount Cook, Newtown, Owhiro Bay, Southgate, and Vogeltown.
These suburbs exist near the southern coastline of the North Island with views of the Cook Strait. Properties with coastal views here are desirable places to live with views not only of this coast, but the South Island can also be seen on a fine day.
The suburbs of Mount Cook, Newtown, and Berhampore south of the CBD are old settlements going back as far as 1870. This area was developed early because the land is relatively flat compared to other locations in Wellington. These suburbs contain smaller 2-story wooden houses that are located close together. Wellington hospital was built in Newtown in 1878.
