Close up view of iron sand which is found on Auckland's west coast beaches. Iron sand is a type of sand with heavy concentrations of the metal iron. The iron is so abundant that the sand is strongly attracted to the poles of a magnet which is basically how the iron is mined at some New Zealand beaches. Because it is dark grey to black in colour, it heats up in direct sunlight, which can cause temperatures high enough to cause minor burns, so appropriate foot wear is recommended.
