Bethells Beach is 30 km north-west of Auckland city. The community built near the beach is called by the area's Maori name - Te Henga which means 'sand'. Famous for its iron sand, the dunes and beach are a grey to black colour.
The Waitakere River flows into the Tasman Sea at this beach and there are a number of cliffs and caves near the river. The beach itself has a designated lifeguard service during the summer months as there are some dangerous rips and big waves present. Behind the beach is a bushclad area which forms part of the Waitekere Ranges and catchment area. The small beachside community mostly lives in harmony with the surrounding nature. It is less developed than nearby Piha a more popular West Auckland beach.
Some films and videos shot here include: the music videos for single 'Forever and for Always' and Shania Twain's 'Out of the Woods'. Episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules were often located here as were scenes in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.
