Castlepoint is located on Wairarapa's east coast, 68 kms from Masterton - the perfect distance for a day trip from Wellington. Activities are pleny here including: walks, surfing, fishing, boating, and safe swimming.
In 1770, explorer Captain James Cook named this coast, Castlepoint and a 162 metre high coastal rock as Castle Rock because it reminded him of the battlements of a castle. The main attraction of the coast however, is not this rock, but a spectacular uplifted limestone reef. Between this reef and Castle Rock is a scenic lagoon and if that wasn't enough, there is also a great beach next to the reef.
A popular walkway starts near this reef and takes you up to a lighthouse, then along the reef itself providing spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. There is also a walk up to the top of Castle Rock which gives expansive views of the bay.
Castlepoint is also the name of a small settlement here. It has one general store with a restaurant, a number of camping sites, and a nearby golf course. The nearby settlement of Riversdale offers more shops and also has a great beach.
