The 850 km long chain of mountains called the Southern Alps in New Zealand is a popular filming location. Many movies have been filmed here including the popular trilogies: Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. 'Vertical Limit' a thriller about mountain climbing in the Himilayas and the world's second highest peak K2. The Southern Alps was the perfect place to film as they look like the Himilayas, but are much more accessible.
