Kōkako have been sighted in Pureora Forest, Whirinaki Forest Park, and the Te Urewera National Park. These parks are all in the North Island. The South Island species have an orange wattle and are thought to be extinct. There is a small amount of evidence that points to the existence of a few, but no visible sightings.
