The Takahē is a large and endangered flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. There are about 225 remaining birds which are highly protected and part of a breeding program to increase their numbers.
Takahe were believed to be extinct since 1898, but 200 birds were rediscovered in 1948 in a remote area near Lake Te Anau in Fiordland. This find raised the possibility that other supposed extinct birds could still exist in this partly undiscovered area of New Zealand.
Takahe have purple-blue coloring and a greenish brown lower back.
