About Weka

Weka photoThe Weka is a bird endemic to New Zealand. Their feathers are brown with black markings. Being a similar size to the Kiwi and flightless, they are not noctural like the kiwi and forage for food during the day. They can often be seen on or near walking tracks where food scraps can be found. Weka are a curious bird and will investigate when people are nearby. They are omnivore and four subspecies are recognised.
