Inside Aranui Cave and near the entrance is a small colony of cave weta. They prefer to live in darkness and will venture outside the cave at night except on a full moon. Weta are endemic to New Zealand and there are about 70 different species. Cave Weta have extra-long antennae and no ears or hearing organs. They can however feel vibrations through their feet. |
