Located to the north of the Rimutaka Ranges and to the south of the Ruahine Ranges, lie the Tararua Ranges. They are bounded by the Manawatu Gorge near Palmerston North to the north and the Hutt Valley, along with the Rimutaka Hill Road, to the south. The Tararua Ranges' tallest summit is Mitre, standing at 1570 meters. The area is primarily covered with temperate rainforest featuring Beech trees, while higher elevations give way to alpine vegetation such as tussock grass and subalpine shrubland. Higher again, vegetation gives way to rocky scree that becomes snow-capped during winter.
There are three main access points to the Tararua Ranges and a number of smaller entrances. The three main entrances are:
HoldsworthHoldsworth is the main eastern entrance to the forest park accessible from the Wairarapa side of the range. The closest town is Masterton
Waiohine GorgeWaiohine Gorge is the southeastern entrance with the nearest town being Carterton.
Otaki ForksŌtaki Forks is the main western entrance with Ōtaki being the nearest town.
