The Southern Waiotauru River is a tributary of the Ōtaki River located in Otaki Forks. It's source is both the Waiotauru River and Eastern Waiotauru River (Snow River). The river lies within the Tararua Mountains and Tararua Forest Park where there are a number of scenic walks offering views of the river and surrounding mountains.
The river is a great place for a swim and the river bank has some grass areas above making them popular picnic spots during the warmer months. A scenic loop walk starts at Otaki Forks at a swing bridge near the carpark and takes you along a plain located between the Southern Waiotauru River and Otaki River. While on the walk, you can see snow on the mountain peaks during winter and flowers in bloom in the summer on the plain.
