The lower slopes of Mount Ruapehu near the town of Ohakune offer a number of fine forest walks through Mangawhero Forest. Trees that grow here include: mature Rimu, Miro and Matai. These ancient trees survived the massive Taupo eruption of 186 AD and represent one of only a few remnants of Podocarp forest in Tongariro National Park. |
