View of Tongariro National Park as seen from the town of Taupo and on the shoreline of the lake. The snow capped peaks are volcanoes, but so is Lake Taupo itself. In fact, the lake hides the caldera of the world's most destructive volcano in Earth's last 70,000 years. The last eruption took place around the year 186 AD with both the Romans and Chinese recording the event in their historical records describing both the noise of the explosion and the sight of brilliant sunsets.
