About Tologa Bay

Tologa Bay is located on the western coastline of the North Island in the Gisborne region. It is also the name for a small settlement here. Located 45 kilometres north of Gisborne the bay is both rugged and remote and steeped in both Pakeha and Maori history. Tologa Bay is one of the main stops for travellers on the Pacific Highway.

The area offers some nice walks with the most popular being on the second longest wharf in the country which offers great views of the bay and is a good location for fishing. With some ladders on the wharf, some people like to jump into the sea and then climb back onto the wharf, although signs discourage jumping off the wharf. To the right of the wharf is a long cliff that extends out to a headland.

Above the cliff is Cooks Cove Walkway which offers many great views over the bay and out to the Pacific Ocean. The destination - Cooks Cove is a nice place for a leisurely swim but it has historical importance as one of the places where Captain James Cook stopped as he sailed around New Zealand. The walk documents this history with some signs and there are many great views onroute. Maori also occupied this area for many centuries and found the cove a good place for fishing and gathering seafood.

In summer, the population of Tologa Bay swells just like the waves and attracts tourists, campers, and surfers who come to enjoy the ideal combination of sea and warm weather. There are a couple of camping grounds behind the beach with one being free. There is also an active Surf Life Saving Club that patrols during weekends and public holidays in summer.
