Tongan culture is unique in the South Pacific as it was never colonized like other island nations in the region. The result is the island has a monarchy and little influence from Britain or France as many other islands in Oceania have.
Many Tongans today live in New Zealand and Australia, but for those who remain, they are often supported by family that work in these countries.
Relations with other nations in the South Pacific are good, although they do not get on that well with nearby Samoa as their histories have had many unfortunate conflicts that have remained in the memory of many Tongans and Samoans.
