The Banyan Tree is a fig that starts life as an epiphyte. The seed germinates in a crack or crevice of its host tree and then an aerial prop root system grows down to the ground and turns into thick trunks that surround the host trees trunk. Older trees can cover a wide area with their extensive root system.
