Tongans make up the vast majority of the inhabitants of Tonga. They are a Polynesian ethnic group with little mixture of Melanesian and European meaning that most Tongans have brown skin, brown eyes, and black hair. According to archaeological and linguistic research, they are the descendants of people who left Fiji and other parts of Melanesia to settle West Polynesia, including Tonga.
