South Australia Travel Itinerary

Adelaide / Barrossa Valley / Flinders Ranges

Adelaide
AdelaideAdelaide is the capital city of South Australia. It is a coastal city located between Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges. The city is known for its stylish architecture, boutique shopping, art events, nightlife, fine dining, and even sandy beaches. Enjoying a mediterranean climate, the city is conveniently located among the wine regions of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley. The beachside suburb of Glenelg offers the 'Grand' a famous hotel as well as many restaurants and cafes. For a great view of the city, Adelaide Hills, and plains below, you could head to Montefiore Hill.

Barrossa Valley
Barossa Valley is is one of the best wine-producing regions in Australia. Touring the wineries and wine tasting is popular. Restaurants and bars in the area also serve a good selection of Barossa vintages, as well as offerings from the rest of Australia. Due to early German immigration, there is a heavy German influence that can be seen in the architecture of older buildings and also the local cuisine. Many local restaurants and cafes serve "traditional" German-heritage food, including a range of sausages such as Bratwurst and Mettwurst, and cream buns are popular.

Flinders Ranges
Flinders RangesIf time and budget permit, you could explore the Flinders Ranges - the largest mountain range in South Australia, approximately 200 km north west of Adelaide. These ranges provide a great Outback adventure in one of the more scenic parts of the Outback. Places of interest include Wilpena Pound, a giant natural ampitheatre. Flinders Ranges National Park is also a great place to visit with many lookouts, small canyons, and unusual rock formations. Mount Remarkable National Park also offers spectacular views. Arkaroola Village an outback settlement and resort at the hub of a wilderness sanctuary in the Northern Flinders Ranges is a great place to stay. The Flinders Ranges is ideal for outback drives, camping, trekking, and viewing the southern stars as the the air is clear, dry, and has little to no light pollution. As wild as the place may be, there is plenty of accommodation, including campsites to luxury eco villas.
