About Gisborne

Gisborne is the name of both a city and region located on the North Island's eastern coast. The region is famous for its sandy beaches, warm climate, and laid back lifestyle while the city serves as an essential hub for the surrounding rural and tourist economy.

Gisborne is located within a days travel by car from either Auckland or Wellington. The city Both the city and region are a popular destination for Kiwis during the Christmas break given the warm climate and abundant beaches. Beautiful swimming and surf beaches here include Midway Beach, Waikanae Beach, Wainui Beach and Makorori Beach. Further afield, you can make a day trip to the coastal attractions of Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, and Mahia Peninsula.

Non-coastal attractions in the region include the local wine industry and vineyards where you can dine and sample the local produce. Further inland lies the scenic Rere Waterfall which is great for swimming and nearby Rere Rockslide, a popular natural rock slide made smooth by the constant erosion of Wharekopae River. Morere Hot Springs another natural attraction offers a soak in hot mineral pools surrounded by native rainforest. Lake Waikaremoana located in Te Urewera National Park is also a great place to visit within the largest national park in the North Island.
